Anwar bin Ibrahim, a Malaysian politician who was born on August 10, 1947, has been the country's 10th prime minister since November 2022 (Jawi: , IPA: [anwar brahm]). From August 2008 to March 2015 and again from May 2020 to November 2022, he held the positions of 12th and 16th Leader of the Opposition. In addition, he held the positions of 2nd Chairman of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition since May 2020, 2nd President of the People's Justice Party (PKR) since November 2018 and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tambun since November 2022. He also served as Minister of Finance from March 1991 to September 1998 and again since December 2022.In the Barisan Nasional (BN) government of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, from 1982 until his ouster in 1998, he furthermore held the offices of Deputy Prime Minister and numerous other Cabinet positions.
Anwar, a University of Malaya graduate, began his political career as one of the founding members of the Malaysian youth organisation Angkatan Belia Islam (ABIM). [4] Anwar served in a number of cabinet roles in succeeding governments in the 1980s and 1990s after joining the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the largest party in the long-ruling BN coalition. He played a key role in Malaysia's reaction to the 1997 Asian financial crisis while serving as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister in the 1990s. [5] After Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad ousted him from his positions in 1998, he led the Reformasi campaign against the government.Anwar was imprisoned from April 1999 until his release in 2004 after his conviction was overturned, following a sodomy and corruption trial that was criticised by human rights organizations[6] and numerous foreign countries. He returned as Leader of the Opposition from 2008 to 2015 and brought together opposition parties to form the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition, which ran unsuccessfully in the general elections of 2008 and 2013. He led a demonstration after contesting the election results from 2013.
Anwar's unsuccessful bid to lead Selangor in the 2014 Kajang Move caused a nine-month political crisis that was resolved when he was given another five years in prison in 2015 following a second sodomy conviction. [7] Anwar re-joined Mahathir Mohamad in the 2018 general election-winning Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance while still incarcerated. PH went on to win the election. After an indeterminate interim period, Mahathir laid forth a plan for Anwar to succeed him as prime minister.Anwar was released from prison in May 2018 after receiving a royal pardon from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Muhammad V[9]. [10][11] While his wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail held the position of Deputy Prime Minister in the PH administration, he was re-elected to parliament in the 2018 Port Dickson by-election. The new Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition led by Muhyiddin Yassin was sworn in as a result of the coalition's breakdown during the 2020–22 Malaysian political crisis, and Anwar was elected Leader of the Opposition for a second time in May 2020.
Anwar was sworn in as the tenth Prime Minister of Malaysia on November 24, 2022, after helping Pakatan Harapan gain a majority of seats in the general election held in Malaysia that year. [12] Anwar appointed a number of lawmakers from Pakatan Harapan, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and UMNO to the newly established unity government's cabinet on December 2, 2022. As the Finance Minister, Anwar identified himself. [13] Anwar has long supported changes to Malaysia's political structure and Islamic democracy.
